Just wish we could have got -5 grrrrrrrrrr....temps always crater out right around 6:30-7am this time of year.....
I wasn't sure we were gonna get there to be honest. Seems the coldest temps are where we would expect them to be right along with the best snowpack. Washington hitting -2 is huge since they are right on the water. Kinston was down to 1 but they lost their temp sensor at the worst time. I'm amazed at the wakefield and ahoskie temps. Who would have thought Ahoskie would hit -7? Wakefield -11? Thats pretty impressive.

They did it last year when they got that big Jan snow........same basic temps as last night.....I think we got down to 9 or so that night last year.
PGV is currently running 21.7 degrees below normal for the month of Jan lol.....and that doesnt include today....

Again in Fountain -- the store and at my house -- 4 above.
What snow pack do you have still? Have you driven to greenville and noticed the increase in snow pack?
I haven't set foot outdoors a single time ever since the night it snowed, when I dashed outside naked and barefoot to measure the snow.
But from what I can tell by looking out of my windows, I'm left with about 75% coverage, and what remains is getting thin. Having snowpack is not the only thing -- it's having deeper snowpack that really helps knock down daily lows. I've noticed that for years. And my snowpack is the skimpiest of anyone's in the region. I am not surprised to hear that Ahoskie came in with a headline low temperature. They also came in with a 7" total.
I'm fixing' to get out of here and pick up a friend for lunch. Then she and I will ride around and check things out. I'm going to cross the Tar River at every bridge from Hasting's Ford to Falkland, see what I see.
Is it the(sandy?)soil? The elevation? Or both? I've long noticed how surprisingly cold it can get on the coastal plain. Delaware's low temps often surprised me when compared to the DC/MD area (at and above the fall line) over the years.
Even at the Delmarva coast the temperature can reach knock your socks off cold. For example Ocean City, Md. was 3F this morning while Annapolis hit 7F and D.C. was 9F in the city with 0F in the NW suburbs (all with a NW wind.)

Part of it is the “heat island” effect of larger cities that can skew temps a few degrees warmer on radiational cooling nights. It also depends on elevation, usually the low spots get colder on nights like last night as the cold dense air “settles” in those spots. The fact that Greenville hit -4F is insane. Never thought I’d see that in my lifetime.
I'm the latest victim of the frozen pipe problem. Hope it warms up tomorrow.
Good luck. I hope it never gets this cold again.
Now our water line to the freezer is frozen. Our ice maker and water dispensers aren't working at all. I'm like you I'm done with this extended cold crap.

Looks like i will make it ok. I love the snow we finally got but i hate the cold that never ends.
