I'm expecting the crest to reach about 25-26 feet in Greenville. I don't think it goes any higher than that but you never know. Wonder if they'll shut down 264 or if any portions of it will flood?
If you go back and watch the video I posted yesterday at around 30 to 35 seconds there is a spot on the nw bypass that the water was only a little below the road. I'd expect that spot to over run the road at 25 feet. I'm fact at the news.conference the mayor said he suspected that road and memorial bridge will close at some point. 264 by hastings ford is expect to remain open

Also I'm noticing the Neuse River looks like it's peaking near Goldsboro but then the water forecast shows a second "surge" of water that keeps it from dropping for another 1-2 days. I'm guessing this is from some of the dams that have been opened up near Raleigh. Also Kinston now forecast to break its all time record as well.

Kinston river is SKYROCKETING right now. It'll easily hit 29 feet and break the all-time record and could make a run for 30 feet. It's going up quickly right now and has already exceeded 24 feet.
Steve I agree your video showed several places where the Tar River was close to going over the road. I'm actually surprised it hasn't yet. I guess it will tomorrow if it hits 25 feet. I was so young when Floyd hit I don't remember it all that well and how extensive the flooding was. I do remember seeing pictures and this reminds me a lot of it. Seems like Tarboro, Rocky Mount and then Goldsboro/Kinston will be hit the hardest or have been already.

Heard on the local news that a dam broke upstream of the Neuse River in Kinston which would explain the fast rise of the water. Might hit 30 feet at the rate it's going up right now.
Good morning. I went to my nearby Food Lion on Charles Blvd. yesterday and saw a lot of empty shelves, especially in the meat sections. Anyone notice meat not being distributed?

Yeah its because the trucks coming from the Food Lion distribution centers cant get to Greenville, easily at least...same thing happened in Floyd only worse....all major roadways in the area are underwater just about....I think they can get in from the east on Hwy 33 but our local Food Lion distribution center in in Dunn on I-95 and that entire area was hard hit...so they probably couldnt get out of that area....plan on the shelves staying like that for 3-5 more days at least...not sure where the other chains DC's are.

Hwy 33 at Jaylynns now closed....10 St at Brook Valley going to be closed soon if it isnt already, 5th St at Green Springs park is closed at that bridge so you cant get up to 10th that way now...

Surprise 264 bypass isn't closed yet. In steve's video you can see it's near the edge and that's from a few days ago. Kinston looks like they're getting hit the worst now with the tar river at 27.3 feet, a rise of 4 feet from this time yesterday. Expected crest of 29 feet will easily break the old record of 27.7.

Chicod went up faster overnight than I thought it would. I compared the level when I went home last night after 11pm to what it was when I checked it on my dinner break at 6:30. I didn't think it was rising fast enough to close this morning. Maybe I don't have a clue as to water levels either lol

In the aftermath of Matthew I have to say the models did a good job with the winds and rainfall totals. The heaviest rain was slightly more inland than forecast but I still had 9" in Greenville.
Also winds gusted officially to 59mph and sustained of 45 at PGV. I bet some areas had some low 60s wind gusts which was fairly close to what the HRRR was showing. Other models that were high res like the 4km NAM and ARW/NMM models did a good job with the winds also.
I think after Hermine and now Matthew this goes to show models have improved a lot and while not perfect give us a good idea of what type of rain/wind conditions we can expect.

Tar River gauge is awaiting repair. I guess something in the river hit and damaged it. Meanwhile Kinston has surpassed its all-time record and is on the way to 29 feet. Currently 27.73.

I just rode down there on my break. It's close and may be encroaching by tomorrow morning. Not sure how long it takes the rise to make it from the gauge in Greenville to there. Another foot to a foot and half and it may begin creeping on the road.
Good thing is, I have the next six days off. Tonight will be the last time I have to worry about it. 👍

Is the depth is manually checked during flood events?
