We've probably all experienced close lightning strikes that make a crack sound *simultaneous* to the lightning, followed by the main thunder a second or so later. I assume the first sound comes from one or more rising streamers very close to the observer -- uncomfortably close. This thundersnow video, I believe, shows what I'm talking about -- the strike at 0:36. What do y'all think?

You may be right. Check this video out. I had a close call back in 2016. If you listen to my vid, just before the main crack, there's a light "thump" or "bump" (at about 1.5 second) followed by a sizzle or power surge type sound. The bolt hit to the immediate left of me out of frame.
I never saw or heard anything but the main clap until I went back and watched the video.

All of this reminds me, I once lived in a house in Cary that had big aluminum window blinds in the living room. They always crackled during a thunderstorm. It was pretty weird.

Also dont give up on winter just yet, still thinking we get a pattern flip for a week or two in a week or so and that there will be several threats for winter weather in that time frame.....

I dunno, guess we will see.....the FV3/GFS has a nice front end thump but the ultimate storm track is still crappy, need the flow to flatten out and prevent the main low from running up the Apps....ens look ok a lot have higher totals showing a flatter flow and more eastward low track. Still the Euro and Ukie havent gotten on board with it so its still very possible this is just a phantom....
The Euro ens had 5 panels with decent snows for us and then it had this one which is obviously the one we want to happen....

Models slowly going colder for the Tues night Wed morning event, the GFs/FV3/Icon/Euro all have a dusting or better for us now.....soundings are super close wouldn't take much for this to be a 1-2" front end thump but in the end it will go all rain....still a chance at some snow.
