There's been much talk about North Korea lately including the possibility (however slim) of nuclear weapons being used. This post is to bring attention (in case it's not already on your minds) to the importance of weather in such a situation.
It's nigh impossible to find real-time positions of our carrier strike groups but I've read that at some point, within a week or two, we may have three of them near Korea. These strike forces are useful for both conventional and nuclear attack but are not necessary for the latter because our submarines can do that at a moment's notice.
God forbid anyone detonate a nuclear weapon (and I'd wager no one will), but if they do, radioactive fallout will of course be a monumental concern for everyone in the region. Should we launch a conventional strike on N.K. the door is open for any possibility so it must be done when wind conditions are in everyone's best interest.
If tensions reach extreme levels I'd look at the GFS Asia charts to see the winds, concentrating on the surface to 500mb which must not carry the fallout to neutral/allied population centers. Radioactive dust above 500mb would be of lesser concern as it would be finer material more widely dispersed and carried out by the westerlies. Bank it, a U.S. first strike would only occur when weather conditions are optimum.

I would say the Euro might even be better to look at in such a situation. I imagine our government likely has some systems in place to calculate and track potential impacts were they to actually use nuclear weapons. As it stands now though, I don't see Korea as actually using them (if they have nuclear weapons). I think they're testing their limits to see what they can get away with and how world leaders will respond. For now, they seem to be backing off a bit, or hiding what they're doing better.

Well with the recent testing of their nuclear, or hydrogen bomb, this could be a real concern in th coming days. I do believe they’re doing everything they can to provoke the US or other nations into an all out war.
